Bilibili Comics Shutdown
Time to Read: 37 minutes On January 24th, 2024, Bilibili Comics announced the shutdown of the service on February 29, 2024. There’s a lot that can be said about Bilibili Comics and how they have operated in the past 2, 2.5 years, but the conclusion is the same, whether the criticism is positive or negative, so there’s not much point in discussing all the issues and their, at times questionable…

"Yesterday was like Death"/昨日如死 by Hui Nan Que/回南雀
"Who the fuck has it easy? I was living a pretty good life. If it weren't for your amnesia, if it weren't for your amnesia ...." We would have gotten together already. “谁他妈容易?我本来也过得好好的,要不是你失忆,要不是你失忆……” 我们就在一起了。
Synopsis
Star actor Xi Zonghe loses his memory of the last five years after a car accident. During that time, he has broken up with the love of his life, superstar actor Jiang Mu, and is now partnered with relatively unremarkable B-list actor Gu Tang. His manager and friends all tell him Jiang Mu is a cheating scumbag who broke his heart and left him at his most vulnerable, while Gu Tang is the one who stayed by his side and helped him through rehab after an accident that nearly left him paralyzed. However, he just can't believe them or ignore his feelings for Jiang Mu, and tries to get into Jiang Mu's next film, even if it means taking this much needed career opportunity from Gu Tang ....
But the protagonist of the story is actually Gu Tang, who came from a poor family with a mother who died young, a deadbeat father with a gambling addiction, and a brilliant, idealistic younger sister he desperately wants to protect. He dropped out of high school and worked as a host at questionable nightclubs, selling his body along with the expensive alcohol to support his sister through college and graduate school. After entering the entertainment business in a stroke of good luck, he accidentally witnesses Xi Zonghe and Jiang Mu's nasty breakup, and approaches Xi Zonghe with a daring proposition: If Xi Zonghe pays off his family's debts, he'll do whatever Xi Zonghe wants.
With Xi Zonghe's memories missing, Gu Tang becomes the only one who knows the truth: that their fairy tale romance is only a sham fueled by his greed and Xi Zonghe's vanity. He can't let Xi Zonghe get back together with Jiang Mu, because he wants to renew their contract and keep getting paid by Xi Zonghe. The money is all that really matters to him .... isn't it?
What I Like about the story
Very effective use of first person POV! I'm really surprised by how well the author pulled this off "show not tell" even in first person POV. We are shown, gradually and naturally, that Gu Tang is not a reliable narrator and his feelings are different from his words. A lot of "imperfect" relationship or character moments, like white lies, petty thoughts, even harsh words in a heated moment, feel more organic and sympathetic from inside the character's POV, and it's quite funny to see Gu Tang ripping into Xi Zonghe's diva behavior in his internal monologue.
Flawed characters. Gu Tang can be a little manipulative; he knows how to push Xi Zonghe's buttons to get what he wants and isn't afraid to do it. Meanwhile, Xi Zonghe is a real condescending jerk at times, and there is really no excuse for how callously he treats Gu Tang after his amnesia. And he never has to make amends for that because 1) Gu Tang lied to him during that time as well and 2) that's not "the real him" because his memories were missing.
Genuinely messy relationships! The gong used to love someone else -- and while the ex is a scum, the depth and intensity of the gong's past feelings were genuine, and the shou reacts to it in a realistic way. Meanwhile the shou only got into this relationship for the money and lies to keep it going.
The work of making the relationship work. Gu Tang puts in saintly levels of patience in this relationship; he looks after XZH's leg injury meticulously while tolerating the latter's cold attitude and bad temper for years before it eases up. Xi Zonghe sees the better parts of Gu Tang beyond his "obsession" with money, and silently supports him and his career. They are not two perfect people who are made for each other, but people who learned to be good partners for each other. (And it helps that they are very compatible in bed.)
But on the other hand
The gong doesn't really "suffer" for his "poor" treatment of the shou during the amnesia phase. I don't necessarily feel like he needs to go on a crematorium chase, but I do wish they did more to address it. However, when you consider that
his first love is a cheating scumbag to who broke his heart
he got into a car accident that nearly paralyzed him
then he got into a second car accident that gave him amnesia
Maybe he has been unlucky enough and deserves a bit of a break, even if what he has dealt with doesn't hold a candle at all to what the shou went through.
I also didn't like some unnecessarily cruel plot points, like two villain characters ending up in sexually abusive circumstances as a part of their karma/"punishment", and a vaguely racist interlude in which a Chinese film crew gets kidnapped in Africa because it's a violent and lawless land 🙃
Overall
This story of love is interspersed with drama, heartache, pining, resentment, jealousy and so much doting affectionate indulgence of truly ridiculous demands because they are in love. There's plenty of twist and turns in the story that keeps the "dog blood" flowing. But at the end of the day, it's a tale of "mutual salvation" -- of two flawed and lost people who helped each other move onto the next, better part of their lives, together.
